Hurunui District

The Hurunui District is a political district on the east coast of the South Island, north of Christchurch. It forms part of the Canterbury North. It extends to the Conway River south of the Kaikoura Peninsula. It is bordered on the west by the snow capped peaks of the Southern Alps and on the east by the rich oceanic waters of the Pacific. Its land area is 8,660.43 square kilometres. It has a usually resident population of 11,529 (2013).

The towns of Amberley, Cheviot, Culverden and Hanmer Springs are the major urban areas.

The main economic sectors are agriculture, forestry and fishing,

The current district mayor is Winton Dalley.
