The Waimate District is part of the Canterbury Region in the South Island of New Zealand. The main town in the district is that of Waimate but there are many smaller rural communities dispersed throughout the area.

The district is administered by the Waimate District Council and regionally by the Canterbury Regional Council. Craig Rowley is current mayor.

Waimate boasts several short walks including the Waimate Walkway which leads to the Whitehorse Lookout rewarding walkers breathtaking views over the district.
