Xi Jinping Returns to Beijing after Concluding His Successful Visit to Four European Countries

On April 1 local time, President Xi Jinping returned to Beijing after concluding his state visit to Belgium.

Belgium is the last stop of Xi Jinping’s European tour.

From March 22 to April 1, President Xi Jinping paid state visits to the Netherlands, France, Germany and Belgium, during which he attended the Nuclear Security Summit in the Hague, Netherlands, and visited the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the headquarters of the European Union (EU).

As the first visit of President Xi Jinping to Europe since taking office, it has upgraded the level of China’s relations with the four countries and with the EU in a comprehensive manner and endowed the development of China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership with new strategic contents under the new circumstances.

In the Netherlands, Xi Jinping met with King Willem-Alexander and held talks with Prime Minister Mark Rutte. This marks the first visit of the Chinese President to the Netherlands since the establishment of diplomatic relationship between the two countries.

At the Nuclear Security Summit in the Hague, Xi Jinping comprehensively stated China’s approach to nuclear security for the first time and briefed on the measures taken and achievements scored by China on strengthening nuclear security, actively promoting international cooperation.

In France, Xi Jinping held talks with President François Hollande. They attended together the commemorative events for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between China and France and respectively made speeches, bringing the commemoration to the climax. At the headquarters of the UNSECO, Xi Jinping delivered an important speech, advocating exchanges between different civilizations and learning from each other.

Xi Jinping's visit to Germany marks the first state visit of the Chinese President to the country over 8 years, sending out the positive message of deepening China-Germany all-round strategic cooperation. During his stay in Germany, Xi Jinping held talks with President Joachim Gauck and Chancellor Angela Merkel, and paid a visit to Dusseldorf.

Belgium saw the first state visit by the Chinese head of state for 27 years. Xi Jinping met with King Philippe of Belgium and parliamentary leaders, and held talks with Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo.

This also marks the first visit of the Chinese head of state to the headquarters of the EU. Xi Jinping held meetings and talks respectively with President Herman Van Rompuy of European Council, European Parliament President Martin Schulz and European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, and delivered an important speech at the College of Europe in Bruges.

President Xi Jinping's European tour has achieved fruitful results and received high attention from the international community. During his visit, China signed cooperation agreements and documents in various fields with those countries respectively.
