At the invitation of Mayor Winton Dalley, Consul General Jin Zhijian visited Hurunui District on March 13 to learn the impact of the Kaikura earthquake of last November and the recent drought and fire in the district.
In the Company of Mayor Winton Dalley and other people, Consul General Jin visited some cafes,school,farm and spa in Cheviot, Waiau and Hanmer Springs and had friendly conversations with business owners, school headmaster and students.
The earthquake has caused damage to infrastractures, such as roads, business and residential buildings, schools, water tanks, etc. In some parts of Hurunui, the agriculture, husbandry, business and people's life have been affected. While in the tourist town Hanmer Springs, roads, spa facilities, hotels and restaurants have remained intact and the tourist industry is running normally.
Consul General Jin expressed sympathy for the loss of Hurunui suffered in a series of natural disasters. He believed that under the leadership of the Hurunui district council, important progress would be made in the reconstruction process. He hoped that the disaster areas would recover soon. He emphasized that the Chinese side would enhance communication with Hurunui, deepening bilateral cooperation in the areas of tourism, business and trade, education and culture. Mayor Winton Dalley welcomed Consul General Jin's visit and thanked the Chinese side for its sympathy. He hoped to conduct cooperation with the Chinese side in various fields and push forward the bilateral relationship.
