Consul General Wang Zhijian Visited Ashburton

On December 21, Consul General Wang Zhijian visited Ashburton upon invitation. He met with Mayor Donna Favel and other local officials and exchanged views on deepening bilateral exchanges and cooperation.

Mayor Favel warmly welcomed the visit of Consul General Wang. She said Ashburton attaches great importance to developing relations with China and is willing to further explore cooperation potential in primary industry as well as tourism, education, culture and other areas. She stressed that the district welcomes more Chinese investment and more Chinese tourists to experience local tourist attractions. She spoke positively of progress achieved in Ashburton’s sister-city relationships with Puyang of Henan Province and Xianyang of Shaanxi Province and looked forward to taking advantage of the NZ-China tourism year to deepen exchanges and cooperation with relevant provinces and cities in China through sister-city channels.

Consul General Wang expressed appreciation to Mayor Favel and other local friends from all walks of life for their support of and contributions to bilateral relations. He pointed out that Ashburton as an important farming area and tourist resort of New Zealand has unique advantages in deepening cooperation with China. He said that the Chinese Consulate General is willing to continue to maintain communication and collaboration with the district council and relevant agencies to jointly promote exchanges between relevant provinces and cities in China and Ashburton so as to further upgrade pragmatic cooperation in key areas and effectively improve the wellbeing of both peoples.

Accompanied by Mayor Favel, Consul General Wang visited the site of the Chinese settlement restoration and was briefed on the living conditions of Chinese immigrants in the early 20th century after the "gold rush" era.

He later also visited the New Zealand Dairy Collaboration and Pluck Engineering.
